Happy Halloween 2016 Holiday Card

Happy Halloween here is the girls 2016 holiday card.

Happy Halloween 2016 Holiday Card

This year the girls decided to dress up as Star Wars characters for Halloween. I took the opportunity to do a little green screen and Photoshop work and put them in the movies. The photo below is their two sided Halloween card. I was impressed by the quality of the Mpix card. They turned out great.

This is our second year doing this so I guess it is a tradition now. Check out last years photo!

Do you know who they are dressed up as? Take a guess by commenting below. read more

I missed shooting…

A few weeks back I went to the first ever Harvard Balloon Fest. It was tough getting up early in the morning, getting my feet soaked and did I mention getting up early. I can easily say I am not a morning person. I was also the  only person on the field who didn’t have a digital camera. I dared to take my untested Hasselblad 500 and 80mm f2.8 lens. I’m glad I did.

New Video | Starline Flash Mob | Premiere Pro

Below is a brand new video. I created it at the last 4th Fridays held at the Starline Gallery. It has Leyla participating in the flash mob that entertained the crowd. Forgive some of the video edits, this was my first time putting a video together using Premiere Pro. I used my GoPro Hero 4 Silver with a 3 axis gimbal to capture footage. Hope you like it. If you do visit my Youtube channel and Subscribe, and make sure to give the video a thumbs up.

What is a gimbal?

A gimbal is one of those things that is easier to show that to explain.
Check out the video below to learn about one of the most important pieces in my GoPro videography kit.

[bctt tweet=”Video Blog, What is a gimbal? #GoPro” username=”gdotarroyo”]

It is the tool that let me hand off my GoPro to my wife, allowing up to capture my daughter’s black belt test.

It is nice to be able to know that even when I’m off shooting photos, I will get stable and steady video. This opens up a lot of possibilities, and let’s a small crew (essentially just me) capture an entire event. read more

How to edit with the free Nik Collection starting in Lightroom

The video above will share how I edit with the free Nik Collection plugins starting in Lightroom. Now that the Nik collection is free, I wanted to share how to actually access it inside of Lightroom CC. It is a bit different than how you would use a preset, but more like how to edit in Photoshop CC from Lightroom.

Would you like to learn more about Lightroom?  I have a fun Lightroom workshop scheduled regularly.  There are also lots of Lightroom blog posts if you explore my site. read more

Event Shooting

Events, much like weddings are extremely difficult for a photographer.

Dark lighting

Moving subjects

Trying to capture candid moments

Staying out of the way

Certain recommend shots

Long hours

Did I mention dark lighting

All these things lead to much difficulty when trying to capture an event. Add to this some self imposed difficulty, like using a mirror less camera, and not having used autofocus in a few years all leads to added stress.

Big Boy Camera

Sometimes you need to have you camera look more “Professional”.

My photography friends and I know that a Sony A7 has a full frame sensor. [bctt tweet=”Ultimately it is photographer, not the camera, that makes a professional.” username=”gdotarroyo”]

There are those times, those times when it just helps perception for your camera to look bigger. I have one of those days coming up, my camera has to look like a Big Boy Camera.

I rented a Sony 70-200mm f4 lens, and threw my extended grip on the little A7, now it looks bigger. Not bad for a compact mirrorless camera which usually has a 50mm f1.4 manual focus lens on it. read more

You may or may not know (ok if you don’t know you must live under a rock) but today is the official opening of the seventh installment of Star Wars, The Force Awakens. You may be asking yourself, what does this have to do with Giovanni’s photography blog. Truthfully not a whole lot.

But I am a big geek and not a whole lot has been going on in my head besides thinking about the movie. By the time the blog post comes out I will have seen the newest movie not once but twice.

Enjoy this photo of the latest star droid BB8. Yes it is my Sphero and I’ve had him since they came out. read more
